Winter Bases

Also known as “The One That Was Supposed To Be Called Summer Bases But Evolved Into Winter Foundations” ( somehow I hardly wore any bases between May and October). Foundations and coverage have found their way back into  my make up stash, and these 4 bases have been tried and tested these last few months. Spoiler alert, there were 2 absolute winners, one that was just so-so, and one that turned out to be a complete no-no. First up, I went straight fo the Shiseido Waso Colour Smart Day Moisturizer. After originally dismissing this little tube as not being moisturizing enough for my Sahara dry skin,  I dug it back out a month or two ago and reintroduced it into my routine, but with a little twist. Instead of just going by its moisturizing mismatch with my skin, I started layering it over my Sukin Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin as a base, a little cover-up operation without having to go for a heavy hitter foundation or a glitter-ball, all too quick at disappearing BB/CC Cream, …

Into the Glow

Into the glow we go! After a long festive season, a polar vortex winter and the mother of all allergic reactions, I am more than ready to welcome Spring and reclaim that glow! I might have to wait a bit longer to feel that first crisp in the air or see those first buds on the trees, but I do have a few new tricks up my sleeve to lightly amp up the volume and get that soft lit-from-within effect I love. Preparation is key, no gorgeous painting without a pristinely prepped blank canvas, so after my morning routine, I apply a thin layer of the Elizabeth Arden Eight Arden Cream. A golden oldie, but as my nan always used say:  ” The classics never go out of style”, and this product is the textbook example of a classic! A thin layer of the thick cream seals in the moisture, acts as a barrier between my skin and the extreme elements we are battling this moment, and functions as a primer for the Bourjois Air …

Bourjois Rouge Velvet The Lipstick

It’s Friday, I’m in love! What better way to start the weekend than a kick-ass lipstick and an overflow of shades to choose from? A girl has to have options, right? Bourjois understands that like no other, and launched their Rouge Velvet The Lipstick Collection late last year. A mouth-watering series of 12 matte lipsticks promising to be intensely pigmented and long-wearing, a touch of French glamour and va va voom. Oh la la…. The Rouge Velvet The Lipstick is not the first lipstick collection I’ve tried from Bourjois, and they’ve  proven themselves to be a premium drugstore brand with their previous lippie launches. Their attention to detail sets them aside from their competitors, with the lipstick bullet shaped for precision application and the casing of the lipstick matching the shade inside. Now all that could just be unnecessary extra’s if the lipsticks themselves turn out to be a dud, so I put the 6 shades that I have at home through the ringer over the holidays, and to be honest, I was suitably impressed! The …

Soft Eyes

After a good few months of rocking a strong lip, I’ve slowly been venturing back into the world of eyeshadows. Electric blues and gold glitters still scare the bejesus out of me, but slowly but surely those soft taupe, sand and copper tones are popping up more and more in my daily make up look. Bourjois takes me straight back to my late teens, when I first started wearing make up behind my mum’s back and would sneak into my local beauty hall to buy their rond pots with my allowance. Fifteen years later, we seem to have come full circle. Last summer they released their Nude Remix combinations, and the golden sand that I first bought all those years ago made it’s way into my collection once more (Oh the memories!). Extra-ordinaire, combined with a touch of brown courtesy of Extra-vertie, is the perfect daytime combo of a nude golden hue with an added darker shade for extra depth. The days that I want to go for a bit more oomph, I’ll whip out …

The ones I just can’t do without!

We all have our favourites. you know, those products that get used far more than any other, the ones you just can’t do without, the ones that are that failsafe option for those moments you’re in a rush, feeling insecureor plainly uninspired. Despite the overflow of make up in my bathroom drawers (I’ve got enough colours to paint rainbows till the end of times), these are the beloved, the ones I’ll never be able to do without. Repurchase guaranteed! Clinique Redness Solutions Daily Protective Base: My primer numero uno! Not necessarily intended as a primer by the hotshots at Clinique, but this fluid keeps my redness at bay whilst at the same time making my make up last longer than a snow cone on the North Pole. Double win! Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara and Bobbi Brown Corrector in Bisque: At any given time, you’ll find 3 or 4 mascara’s in my make up bag, but this one takes the cake. Intense ink-black colour, va-va-voom volume and the perfect curl make my eyes look like …

Drugstore delights

Drugstores are like a treasure trove for make up and beauty addicts, so much to see, so much to try, so much too buy. I’ve lost count of the amount of times these (often impulse) purchases turned out to be big time busts, but sometimes, every once in a blue moon, some of the products really rock. Christmas is over, time to watch the pennies now, so forget Armani, Chanel, NARS and  Charlotte Tilbury, here are my latest drugstore delights. Bourjois is offering some serious lip power these days, and the Rouge Edition Velvet in Personne Ne Rouge and Peach Club have been gracing my lips most days. Velvet-y matte,  deliciously pigmented and glides on like a gloss but longlasting as only a lipstick can be (thoroughly tested on cocktail night with the ladies!). Framboise, Ole Flamingo and Nude-Ist, I’m coming for you! On those days that a softer slick of shine with not too much colour is wat I’m looking for, the Bourjois Shine Edition Lipstick in Grenade-in is just perfect! A deeper, darker …

Beautiful breathtaking burnished bronze for Christmas.

After yesterday’s soft look, time to kick it up a notch! A bronze eyeshadow is my go-to option for any kind of look really, with it’s endless variety from a golden patina over a gorgeous copper to a deep, burnished, almost blackened olive offering a myriad of possibilities. If yesterday’s look was a bit too soft, run of the mill, everyday option for you, but you’re still too scared to go anywhere near that Chanel Mirifique (no worries, that makes two of us), thiseasy to achieve look might just be the ticket for you. Key here is to use creamy textures to ensure longevity, and somehow, a bronze colour somehow works better in a non powdery version. First off, the Laura Mercier Foundation Primer in Radiance Bronze is the perfect start for this look, it lightens and freshens up my look by adding that much needed touch of colour. More of  “a week in Saint Tropez” glow than “tanning bed addict”, this primer might look scarily brown in the tube, but has a beautiful, almost halo-like glow …

A soft look for Christmas

If you’re anything like me, you just love to plan everything. Christmas decorations need to have a theme, table decorations need to match that theme, your Christmas outfit has been chosen long in advance, and even make up looks are contemplated well up front. Not everyone always wants to go all out with a smokey eye so glam the Christmas Tree looks rather dishevelled next to you, but if you want to keep it simple yet elegant, my soft-lit look might just be what you’re looking for. First things first, start by prepping your base with the Clinique Universal Superprimer to keep it looking extra fresh, extra long. Buff in the Sisley Phyto Teint Expert All Day Long Foundation until you’ve got the coverage you prefer, and then finish off by covering those pesky dark circles and red spots. My weapons of choice for that? The NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer and the Bobbi Brown Corrector. A very light dusting of the Bourjois Java Rice Powder delicatly illuminates skin without looking like a disco ball, a …
